Women’s Health Matters 2024-2025 Snapshot Survey

Each year, our Snapshot Survey offers us a vital opportunity to pause, reflect, and truly hear the voices of those at the heart of our work. It’s not just about collecting data; it’s about acknowledging the realities women and girls face, creating space for their voices to be heard, their experiences to be understood, and ensuring they can access support that is responsive to their needs.

A Year of Connection

Over the past year, WHM supported 1,702 women and girls, as well as 311 children, through 2,723 sessions, ranging from intensive one-to-one support to group and therapeutic support, delivered across 26 different services.

The women and girls we worked with came from a diverse range of backgrounds, representing 37 nationalities, 33 languages, and bringing with them a diversity of faiths, cultures, and life experiences.

Over the past year, we also connected with more than 61,000 people through our social media platforms—raising awareness, building community, and reaching women who may not yet be accessing support.

Behind the scenes, we were supported by 46 dedicated volunteers and 22 professionals from other organisations who generously shared their time, skills, and compassion. Their contributions enabled us to expand our reach and provide the best possible support to women and girls throughout the city.

The Realities Women Are Facing

Mental health was a significant theme in this year’s survey responses. 72% of women told us they are currently living with mental health difficulties, and over a third reported experiencing suicidal thoughts. These figures highlight the ongoing impact of trauma and stress on women’s wellbeing, and the importance of accessible, consistent support.

Confidence and connection also emerged as key areas of concern. This year, 71% of women said they were struggling with self-confidence, and 72% reported feeling lonely. These responses reflect the longer-term effects of experiences such as abuse, marginalisation, and social isolation, factors that can significantly affect how women see themselves and relate to others.

Experiences of abuse and violence were also widely reflected in the responses shared. This year, 95% of women told us they had experienced an unhealthy or abusive relationship, and 71% said they had been a victim of violence. These figures highlight the prevalence of harm in the lives of many women we support, and the need for services that are trauma-informed, consistent, and responsive. They also reinforce the importance of creating spaces where women feel safe, respected, and able to access support without fear of judgment.

The Impact of Support

The feedback shared by women in this year’s survey highlights the value and impact of WHM’s support. 100% of women who completed the survey said they felt happy with the service they received, and 96% told us they received help they couldn’t have found anywhere else. 93% said they felt better able to make their own choices after receiving support, and 91% said they felt more positive about the future. These responses reflect the importance of accessible support that responds to women’s needs.

Women also reported a clearer understanding of what abuse is and feeling better able to respond to abuse. Following support from WHM, 96% said they now better understand what abuse is, and 94% felt able to leave an abusive relationship if they wanted to. These figures suggest that access to the right information, delivered in a safe and supportive environment, can play a key role in helping women regain a sense of control and make informed decisions about their lives.

Practical support was also shown to be equally as important. Alongside emotional and therapeutic support, WHM provided help with essentials such as food, travel, and toiletries, additional support that often made it possible for women to attend sessions and stay engaged. One woman shared:

“WHM has helped me in many ways, emotionally, financially, but most of all I feel heard and supported. That has given me strength to continue knowing I am not alone.”

These responses highlight the importance of holistic support that addresses both immediate and long-term well-being and needs.

Looking Ahead

This year’s snapshot survey is more than a collection of statistics; it’s a powerful reflection of what women are facing and a testament to their strength, resilience and growth. It reminds us why our work matters, and why we must continue building services that are trauma-informed, inclusive, and rooted in lived experiences.

We are extremely grateful to every woman who trusted us with her story, to every volunteer who gave their time, and to every organisation that stood beside us. Together, we are creating a future where women and girls feel safe, valued, and empowered.

As one woman told us:

“WHM has been a massive part of my healing journey, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support.”
